Remember when I told you how sugar is the enemy? Like, the worst thing you could eat?
Well, there’s a new perpetrator in town, and his name is Aspartame.
While we’re talking about diets, let me remind you that it is ALWAYS a good idea to check the label of what you’re eating. This may sound tedious, but you get used to it, and your interest peaks!
When you do get in the habit of looking, check out the chemicals. Can you pronounce them all?
If not, you may want to Google them, because they may be hurting your health.

It All Began In a Lab
Being a chemical engineer, lab are like my dojo: a place of solace and practice. But in this instance in 1965, a monster was created!
While creating a bio-assay, an intermediate chemical was synthesized: aspartylphenylalanine-methyl-ester or as you know it – aspartame.
Chemist James Schlatter was recrystallizing aspartame from ethanol, the mixture spilled onto the outside of the flask. Some of the powder got onto his fingers.
Later in the day, when he licked his fingers to pick up a piece of paper, he noticed a very strong sweet taste.
Thus was born aspartame. They took the discovery and ran with it.
As a chemist, I must say that the #1 rule of a lab is DON’T EAT ANYTHING! But for half a century now, the FDA has allowed food companies to poison the American people.
Why Aspartame Is So Bad
It’s even worse for you than sugar… :::GASP:::
I know, I know. Topping the health detriments of sugar is a hard feat to pull off. Can you believe they let you consume this stuff!?
Did you know that many who consume diet soft drinks actually end up gaining weight?
Something that has no calories, tastes sweet, and is marketed as letting us eat sweets without guilt seems pretty impressive, but is it really? Although the apartame does not have calories, it actually stimulates your appetite.
Aspartame has now been linked to 92 adverse health problems, such as:
- Heart Palpitations
- Weight Gain
- Brain Damage
Sugar creates its own health problems, but aspartame is not a better or healthier alternative, regardless of the lower calories.
Both are deadly in their own right.
Common Products That Have It
Nearly every product with aspartame in it is labeled in a deceiving manner. The American food industry is not your friend. They seek to make money off your sugar addiction, and even more income when you try to break it – by just getting addicted to aspartame.
Food manufacturers know that adding aspartame to their formulas is highly addictive, that it pads their profits, and keeps us coming back for more!
Some common products that have aspartame in them:
- Crystal Light
- Sugar Free ANYTHING (almost always)
- Diet ANYTHING (almost always)
- Breakfast Cereals
- Non-Sugar, Tabletop Sweeteners
Words such as “sugar free” or “diet” graze these products, tricking you into thinking that you’re making the better, healthier choice. Sadly, what you’d be consuming is worse.
What is so troubling is that it can be hidden in food under the name of ‘natural flavors’, ‘artificial flavors’, or acesulfame potassium. The tag ‘Sugar-free’ should be a red flag.
What To Drink Instead
Some ideas for beverages that aren’t boring, tasteless, or bad for your health:
- Tea with honey or stevia
- Carbonated, flavored water like La Croix
- Fruit-infused water
- Honey or stevia in your coffee
